Back Issue Bin Review - Doctor Who The Eleventh Doctor - Issue 1

Doctor Who The Eleventh Doctor

Issue #1 (Titan Comics)

Written by Al Ewing, Rob Williams

Art by Simon Fraser

The Doctor, a time traveling alien from the Planet Gallifrey.  Traveling across time and space helping out people in need. This is the first issue of his eleventh incarnation brought to you by Titan Comics.  So Geronimoooo.

Issue one opens with a sad start.  Alice Obiefune is at a cemetery burying her mother.  After the graveside funeral we see a short montage of Alice moving through her normal life.  The story is told in grayscale as Alice is sad and has to deal with the world without her mother.

She faces the loss of her mother as well as now the loss of her job as librarian assistant.  The final nail in the proverbial coffin is her eviction notice as the building she is living in will be destroyed to make way for a new type of housing.

On her way home one day she is surprised by a Rainbow Alien Dog looking thing being chased down the street by The Doctor.  When she sees this Dog the story moves from grayscale to full color. The vibrant color has now changed the pace of the story.

With a few words, the Doctor manages to get Alice to help him chase the Rainbow Dog.  As the two run after the dog, the Doctor explains what it is they are chasing. The creature does get away when the doctor gets distracted by a figure in a doorway that looks familiar.  Therefore, making the Doctor run into a light pole.

Alice stops to check on the Doctor and the alien dog makes it's getaway.  The Doctor properly introduces himself to Alice and then walks off to look for the Alien creature.

Alice then heads back to her world of sadness and tries to save her apartment.  When she suddenly hears a noise, and in her living room the Tardis Appears, and out steps the Doctor.  The Doctor says hello and tells Alice that he noticed that she seemed sad and could use a good cup of tea and an ear to listen.

Alice pours her heart out to the Doctor as she explains everything to him about what has happened in her life.  The Doctor, being a compassionate person, offers her a chance to escape from her troubles for a little time and invites her aboard the Tardis.

Now without getting too spoilery,  we find that Alice is interested in helping the Doctor find the Alien Dog and hopefully get it to where it belongs.  The two seek out the creature.

Do they find the alien? Does it get back home safe? Do humans blow the heck out of it?
Find out in the first Issue of Doctor Who the eleventh doctor adventures.

Matt D's thoughts on the story:

I thought the Story was a solid start to a new series.  It feels much like the television series, the lines and story beats are very similar to a Matt Smith Episode.  We are introduced to the companion first before we see the Doctor. A character that the reader can relate to right from the start.  She is the character that drives the story, as we see the Doctor through her eyes. They go on an interesting adventure together and is a great start up for a new series.

Matt D's thought on the art:

Simon Fraser has done a great job on capturing the Eleventh Doctor's likeness and with the colorist has created a great storytelling element at the beginning of the story.

I give this book a :

8.5 out of 10
